March 2013

Behavioral Health Students,
The March event went off.  The presentations were interesting and effective, healthy food was provided, and there was time after the event to meet and network.  Also, as a bonus, Dr. Darkes and Dr. Levin attended the event.
April 1st will ring in national public health week.  Our organization has agreed to host a table in the College of Public Health building on the first, around mid-day.  This is a good event to attend to learn more about public health.  At the event our focus will be on child advocacy and our organization supports child advocacy efforts.  Child advocacy is an important part of our profession.  John F. Kennedy said, "It is from the numberless, diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped.  Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."
For information about events the BHSO Facebook page is active and is a source of  BHSO event information (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Behavioral-Health-Student-Organization-USF/312659272153660).  If you have a facebook account you can like the page.  This blog will also often hold event information.
Our treasurer has been making progress on finding our student organization funds from the university.  We will be receiving interim funds and we will be funded for the 2013-2014 academic year.
Progress on our website has been slow.  The process of design and implementation requires working with  the Health IS team and there are a number of steps and phases of development, before our website takes shape.  With each approaching day we become closer to a multifunctioning, interactive webpage.
Should you see your fellow behavioral health students within the walls of the university do not hesitate to say hello.  Wear your profession on your sleeve.  This program and the behavioral health world is much smaller than you may think.  By strengthening social and academic collaboration now, we can improve on the quality and capabilities of our profession in the future.

Awareness. Compassion. Solidarity.
